With its comfortable and dense padding, the 053 armchair by Pierre Jeanneret was part of the Haute Cour rooms, the founding core of Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex along with the Secretariat and the Assemblée wing, to complete his cousin Le Corbusier’s 1951 masterpiece. Pierre Jeanneret, with his historical furniture collection, undoubtedly represents a leading figure of this majestic project. Monumental and elegant at the same time, this beautiful armchair features the same compositional scheme as the other furniture pieces, all characterized by the same inverted “V” support structure themes. The enveloping padding covers the seating and the backrest, rigorously characterized by the cushioning, while the armrest is almost completely enfolded and creates the outline of a rounded, geometric shape. The only exposed wooden parts are the rests, and the final joints between the arms and the backrest. Majestic, imposing and refined, this armchair recalls an immediate idea of comfort, elegance and simplicity.
